Ariz. rampage suspect could get lawyer who defended McVeigh, Unabomber

The Arizona Republic and Reuters report accused shooter Jared Loughner will likely be represented by veteran federal public defender Judy Clarke. Loughner, who's already been charged with five counts of murder and attempted murder, including that of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), will appear in federal court today in Phoenix. Clarke, who's now in private practice, collaborates with the Federal Death Penalty Resource Counsel; she's expected to request assignment to the case, a step that sheds light on the possible severity of Loughner's punishment, should he be convicted.

Judy Clarke

Clarke is no stranger to highly charged murder cases. She assisted in the defenses of 9-11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, the "Unabomber" Theodore Kaczynski, Atlanta Olympic bomber Eric Rudolph and Susan Smith, the South Carolina woman who drowned her toddlers in 1994. As Frank notes below, Loughner's court appearance is set for 5 PM Mountain time (7 PM Eastern). Correction: 3 PM Mountain time (5 PM Eastern).

[Webmaster - Judy Clarke seems to be a "handler" for high profile government psychotics/"mind control" subjects. The feds know they can count on Ms. Clarke to guide her clients through the litigation process to a nice cozy life sentence in Supermax where they won't have any contact with the media.]
