While a State Senator, Barack Obama voted against legislation that contained an exception for handguns if it were used in defense of one’s home.
In 1996, Obama said he would support state legislation to ““ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns” on a survey.
After meeting with Vice President Joe Biden at the White House for
continued talks on gun-control, the National Rifle Association released a
statement saying that “we attended today’s White House meeting to
discuss how to keep our children safe and were prepared to have a
meaningful conversation about school safety, mental health issues, the
marketing of violence to our kids and the collapse of federal
prosecutions of violent criminals.”
The NRA voiced disappointment “with how little this meeting had to do
with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda
to attack the Second Amendment.” The agendas of the Interagency Task
Force on Gun Control (TFGC) spent more time proposing restrictions on
registered gun owners than trying to figure out how to prevent another
Sandy Hook shooting tragedy.
In fact, the recent incident was the justification for blaming
“law-abiding gun owners . . . for the acts of criminals and madmen.” It
became apparent to the NRA that the Obama administration was concerned
about rendering the 2nd Amendment ineffectual instead of adding
meaningful contributions to the gun-control debate.-[Full Article]
