Thursday Report: Bloomberg Wouldn't Let Guard Into Brooklyn Over Their Possession of Guns

NewsBusters

A Philly.com report tells us that "National Guard plays key role in N.J. relief efforts." The LA Times has reported that "More than 10,000 National Guard troops in 13 states have been mobilized to assist in the response to Hurricane Sandy, including more than 2,200 who are assisting with recovery efforts in New York." Guard troops are also in New York City to some degree (Mayor Michael Bloomberg says "We have 13 distribution sites opened, staffed by National Guard members"), including hard-hit Staten Island.

But at least as of Thursday, according to Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, as reported by Eli Rosenburg at the the Brooklyn Paper, which calls itself the borough's "leading news media," the mayor has refused a request to allow the Guard into the borough. Based on resource deployment priorities, the Mayor's refusal could be justified. But wait until you see the actual reason Bloomberg gave for his refusal, one which you might think would have received more media attention by now (bolds are mine):

Returning National Guard Troops Set To Smash Wisconsin Protest?

300 soldiers head back to state fresh from Iraq after Gov. Walker put Guard on alert last week to prepare for strikes

Returning National Guard Troops Set To Smash Wisconsin Protest? 180211top

Coincidence or not, the fact that hundreds of National Guard troops are returning to Wisconsin today fresh from battling insurgents in Iraq is sure to alarm union protesters who labeled Governor Scott Walker’s move to put the Guard on alert last week a “threat” designed to intimidate demonstrators who are currently massed around the Capitol in Madison.

In case of a widespread walkout in response to his “budget repair bill,” Walker told reporters last week that he would use National Guard troops to be “prepared…for whatever the governor, their commander-in-chief, might call for. … I am fully prepared for whatever may happen.”

Ostensibly, Walker’s announcement was a signal that he is prepared to replace state workers with National Guard troops, deploying them for example as prison guards. However, protesters cried foul, claiming that Walker was invoking the Guard as an intimidation tactic to suppress dissent.

“Hundreds of Wisconsin National Guard soldiers return to the state Friday,” reports the Wausau Daily Herald.

“About 300 soldiers from the 724th Engineer Battalion will be back at Volk Field where they will be met by senior National Guard officials and family members. A brief ceremony will be held before the soldiers are taken to nearby Fort McCoy to begin about five days of demobilization before their release.”

The unit comprises roughly half of Wisconsin’s National Guard soldiers that are currently on active duty. They return fresh from Iraq after having been on missions to remove roadside bombs placed by insurgents.

They may now face a different type of insurgency, one led by state workers who are furious that their pension and health care contributions are set to double to fill a $3.6 billion budget deficit black hole, while two-thirds of corporations in the state pay no taxes whatsoever according to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.

The sight of fully uniformed National Guard soldiers policing angry Americans could see a repeat of the scenes witnessed in Cairo over the last few weeks. Indeed, Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan (R) is already drawing similar comparisons.

Ryan expressed his opposition to the demands of the protesters, pointing out that even after Walker’s bill is passed, state sector workers would still pay far less in pension and health contributions that private sector workers, but noted that the level of fury surrounding the legislation meant that Walker was now facing, “Riots — it’s like Cairo has moved to Madison these days.”

Making reference to Walker’s threat to bring in the National Guard, liberal activist and author Noam Chomsky told Democracy Now that what happened in Egypt was “the beginning of what we need here – democracy uprising.”

Some have even expressed fears that the Guard could be used to break the strikes at the point of a gun. Such a move would not be without historical precedent.

“The last time Wisconsin called in the National Guard was in 1886. The Guard, then called the State Militia were brought in to break a rally of Milwaukee workers advocating an 8-hour work day. The militia fired into a crowd of unarmed picketers; it’s estimated that 5 to 7 workers were killed,” reports the Huffington Post.

“Maybe the new governor doesn’t understand yet – but the National Guard is not his own personal intimidation force to be mobilized to quash political dissent,” said Robin Eckstein, a former Wisconsin National Guard member, Iraq War Veteran from Appleton, WI, and member of VoteVets.org. “The Guard is to be used in case of true emergencies and disasters, to help the people of Wisconsin, not to bully political opponents.”

Wisconsin National Guard Preps For Worker Unrest After Governor Unveils Emergency Budget

Business Insider

Grace Wyler | Feb. 14, 2011, 9:49 AM

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican, unveiled an emergency budget proposal Friday to deal with the state's growing budget woes. Wisconsin has a $137 million deficit this year, and faces a projected $2.9 billion budget shortfall for 2012 and 2013.

Under Walker's plan, public employees would lose all of their collective bargain rights, except a limited negotiation of wages. State workers would also have to contribute more to their pension and health care benefit plans.

Unions erupted in outrage as they learned about Walker's proposal. The Governor told Milwaukee Public Radio that he has briefed the Wisconsin National Guard to prepare them for any worker unrest today.

Kent State tape indicates altercation and pistol fire preceded National Guard shootings (audio)

Terry Norman with Guard.jpgTerry Norman is surrounded by Ohio National Guardsmen as he seeks shelter after allegedly being assaulted by protesters.

KENT, Ohio -- A noisy, violent altercation and four pistol shots took place about 70 seconds before Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire on antiwar protesters at Kent State University, according to a new analysis of a 40-year-old audiotape of the event.

The discovery adds new perspective to -- and raises new questions about -- one of the signature events of the 20th century, after four decades of spirited discussion and research.

"They got somebody," an observer says. "Kill him!" at least two male voices repeatedly shout, followed by sounds of a struggle and a female voice yelling, "Whack that [expletive]!" or "Hit that [expletive]!" Four distinct shots matching the acoustic signature of a .38-caliber revolver then ring out, according to a review by New Jersey forensic audio expert Stuart Allen...

National Guard Troops Deploying to U.S.-Mexico Border August 1st

The Obama administration announced Monday that National Guard troops will begin to be deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border on August 1st "as part of the administration's unprecedented efforts to combat the transnational criminal organizations that smuggle weapons, cash and people" on the border.

President Obama said in May that up to 1,200 National Guard troops would be deployed to the border to provide support in the fight against illegal immigration and criminal activity along the border.

According to the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defense, the largest chunk of National Guard troops - 524 - are being deployed to Arizona, which has become the focus of the debate over immigration thanks to its controversial immigration law.

Federal officials said California and Texas are getting more than 200 troops each, while 72 are being deployed in New Mexico and 130 are "serving as command and control and other support."

The Obama administration says the troops will be in place for a year. They "will provide direct support to federal law enforcement officers and agents working in high-risk areas to disrupt criminal organizations seeking to move people and goods illegally across the Southwest border," according to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

According to the Associated Press, the troops will be fully deployed by September...

NY National Guard Involved In Mass Arrests Of U.S. Citizens

Troops assisted in over 2,000 arrests last year alone as America sinks into total martial law

NY National Guard Involved In Mass Arrests Of U.S. Citizens 080710top2

It has emerged that the New York National Guard is assisting in the arrests of thousands of American citizens as part of the “drug war,” while at the same time the U.S. government itself orders troops in Afghanistan to guard the poppy fields as heroin floods American streets, in yet another shining example of how the United States is under a state of de facto martial law.

Yesterday we reported on how the New York National Guard is working with local law enforcement authorities to perform sophisticated scans of vehicles entering the New York area looking for guns and drugs, a program celebrated by local new station Fox 23, who today ran a part two on the Guard’s activities in the region.

The news clip lauds the fact that the National Guard are conducting surveillance flights over the area “looking for marijuana” using infrared cameras.

“The New York National Guard assisted in more than 2,000 arrests last year, and had almost $150 million in drug, property, and weapon seizures,” states the report.

The entire justification behind the use of National Guard units in scanning vehicles, making arrests, and going into schools to brainwash kids into thinking its normal to have men in military fatigues toting machine guns walking around American streets providing “security” is that they are keeping drugs off the streets.

But while military assets are being used to track down pot-smoking teenagers in New York, the U.S. government itself is ordering troops in Afghanistan to guard the poppy fields, allowing tons of heroin to flood onto American streets. Opium production has exploded since the invasion of Afghanistan, as the CIA regains control of a much cherished source for its global narcotics trafficking operations.

Gary Webb’s Dark Alliance and other revelations from the Iran-Contra Affair, Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia and beyond all point to the sad fact that those in power in the United States, including the CIA, have driven the drug trade, not slowed or stopped it.

Indeed, in September 2008 it emerged that a Gulfstream II private jet that crash-landed in eastern Mexico carrying 3.3 tons of cocaine had previously been used for CIA “rendition” flights.

The use of National Guard units in arresting American citizens and patrolling the streets is part of the acclimation process to make Americans accept the sight of military assets engaging in domestic law enforcement as a routine occurrence. In rolling out this program under the pretext of the war on drugs, authorities are attempting to perform a slick end run around Posse Comitatus, which would normally make it illegal for the military to conduct such operations.

In the past, scenes of troops ordering citizens around were widely denounced as being characteristic of an authoritarian, backward, dictatorial country under a state of martial law. America was seen as the leading light of the world because its people were free from this tyranny. Now that American is under a de facto state of martial law, such scenes are becoming commonplace.

The fact that many of these Guard troops are returning from Afghanistan and Iraq, where they are part of an occupying force trained to round up and detain the host population in prison camps for the most minor of infractions is also a shocking facet to this story.

As we highlighted yesterday, National Guard units are now being deployed for things like traffic control in places like Kingman Arizona, and providing security at sports events like the Kentucky Derby.

As we reported in 2008, U.S. troops returning from Iraq are now occupying America, running checkpoints and training to deal with “civil unrest and crowd control” under the auspices of a Northcom program that by 2011 will have no less than 20,000 active duty troops deployed inside America to “help” state and local officials during times of emergency.

We have documented numerous instances of troops and National Guard personnel being used to perform law enforcement duties which are transparently outside the purview of the Guard’s supposed role to respond to national emergencies and therefore completely illegal.

In January 2009, soldiers from the Lynchburg-based 1st Battalion, 116th Brigade Combat Team, were used to conduct personal searches at checkpoints in Washington DC for the inauguration of Barack Obama.

In March of that same year, we reported on U.S. Army troops dispatched to patrol the streets of Samson, Alabama, after a murder spree.

On April 6, we reported on a DHS, federal, state, Air Force, and local law enforcement checkpoint in Tennessee. On April 3, Infowars was instrumental in the cancellation of a seatbelt checkpoint that was to be conducted in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security and the 251st Military Police in Bolivar, Tennessee.

In December 2008, we reported on the Marine Corps Air and Ground Combat Center dispatching troops to work with police on checkpoints in in San Bernardino County, California.

On April 22 2009, we reported the deployment of 400 National Guard Combat Support Battalion troops to “maintain public order” at the Boston Marathon.

In June 2008, Infowars posted an article by D. H. Williams of the Daily Newscaster reporting the deployment of 2,300 Marines in the city of Indianapolis under the direction of FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.

We also reported a story on April 22 2009 covering the assault of a local television news team by an irate police officer in El Paso, Texas. A video taken by the news videographer shows uniformed soldiers working with police officers at the scene of a car accident.

If we accept the seamless integration of troops into law enforcement then America as the “land of the free” will cease to exist for good, to be replaced by an oppressive Sovietized police state with an overlay of 21st century technology designed to monitor and control our every movement. This is only made more alarming by the fact that the National Guard are now training with foreign troops to take on American “terrorists” as part of this integration process.

U.S. Troops Won't Be Used To Stop Illegal Immigration

US National Guard troops being sent to the Mexican border will be used to stem the flow of guns and drugs across the frontier and not to enforce US immigration laws, the State Department said Wednesday.

The clarification came after the Mexican government urged Washington not to use the additional troops to go after illegal immigrants.

President Barack Obama on Tuesday authorized the deployment of up to 1,200 additional troops to border areas but State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters, "It's not about immigration."...

New Analysis Of 40-Year-Old Recording Of Kent State Shootings Reveals That Ohio Guard Was Given An Order To Prepare To Fire

The Ohio National Guardsmen who fired on students and antiwar protesters at Kent State University on May 4, 1970 were given an order to prepare to shoot, according to a new analysis of a 40-year-old audio tape of the event.

"Guard!" says a male voice on the recording, which two forensic audio experts enhanced and evaluated at the request of The Plain Dealer. Several seconds pass. Then, "All right, prepare to fire!"

"Get down!" someone shouts urgently, presumably in the crowd. Finally, "Guard! . . . " followed two seconds later by a long, booming volley of gunshots. The entire spoken sequence lasts 17 seconds.

The previously undetected command could begin to explain the central mystery of the Kent State tragedy - why 28 Guardsmen pivoted in unison atop Blanket Hill, raised their rifles and pistols and fired 67 times, killing four students and wounding nine others in an act that galvanized sentiment against the Vietnam War.

The order indicates that the gunshots were not spontaneous, or in response to sniper fire, as some have suggested over the years...

Urban Violence Brings Renewed Calls For National Guard Deployment

CHICAGO (FinalCall.com) - The idea of coordinated military action to counteract gang related violent crime is not a new idea, however, it appears to be gaining traction among some lawmakers as the number of those killed in many cities across America continues to rise.

“Gang activity and its resulting violence has taken a toll on my community for far too long,” stated Illinois State Representative Lashawn Ford, a Democrat. “The Military Code of Illinois specifically states that it is the duty of the governor to deploy such force as he deems necessary in order to suppress individuals acting together and committing violence in violation of our laws. Enough is enough. We've already lost too many lives. We need action now.”...

The Militia On Chicago's Streets? Look At History

Before Illinois officials respond to Democratic state Reps. John Fritchey and LaShawn Ford's call for National Guard units to patrol the streets of Chicago, they'd better give it deep thought.

Military intervention by the Guard, its militia predecessors and the U.S. Army during American domestic crises has left a bloody record.

If Chicagoans remember their history, they will reject the deployment of any military force in their city, whether it be the National Guard or the Army...

Troops Randomly Patrol Streets in Pittsburgh, Respond to "Domestic Disputes"

Flagrant violation of Posse Comitatus as Americans conditioned to accept military Humvees rolling around their neighborhoods

Americans are once again being conditioned to accept the sight of troops patrolling the streets and dealing with domestic law enforcement issues under the pretext of National Guard soldiers “helping” recovery efforts after the deluge of snow that has hit the East coast, the same soldiers who just months ago were also “helping” authorities to brutalize innocent people during the G20 summit in Pittsburgh...
