Craigslist Crime: Victim turns table on brazen robbers

WOIO 19 Action News

AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

Shortly after 6PM Tuesday, a 22-year-old Akron man was robbed inside of his Triplett Boulevard home by three punks armed with handguns.

This, after he advertised an X-Box on Craigslist.

One suspect arrived at John Ruggiero's house and wanted to look at the X-Box to see if the game system worked. The suspect then used his cell phone to call a friend to bring him money.

Within minutes, two other men stormed inside Ruggiero's house, armed with handguns, and robbed him of $85. As the suspects were robbing Ruggiero, he pulled out his own handgun and fired several shots at the suspects. The suspects fled in a white, 4-door car...[Full Article]

Theft is on the rise in a worsening economy

(NaturalNews) It is not strange to hear about cars, jewelry or money being stolen. These days, desperate thieves are choosing bizarre targets: copper wires, air conditioning units, storm drain covers, grapes, ambulances, pain killers and even bees. This petty thievery of agricultural goods and odd supplies is the new norm in a rapidly worsening economy where unemployment is rampant.

The downturn in the economy and record unemployment numbers have created a heightened sense of desperation, which subsequently is leading to a rapid increase in crime levels all over the country.

Air conditioning units in churches have literally been cut loose from their hookups in Houston, Philadelphia, other cities and small towns all over. More than 100 storm drain covers have been stolen in Sacramento in recent weeks. Jackson, MO police are investigating an onslaught of recent robberies targeting various delivery drivers...[Full Article]

25 most dangerous neighborhoods 2010

For the second year in a row, using exclusive data developed by Dr. Andrew Schiller's team at NeighborhoodScout.com, and based on FBI data from all 17,000 local law enforcement agencies, WalletPop reveals the top 25 most dangerous neighborhoods with the highest predicted rates of violent crime in America.

This year, Chicago took the not-so coveted top spot from Cincinnati for the most dangerous neighborhood, while Atlanta has the highest number of neighborhoods making the list (four).

You may ask, why neighborhoods and not cities? Schiller explains that even the cities with the highest crime rates can have relatively safe neighborhoods, and thus it is less useful to generalize about an entire city.

Top 25 Most Dangerous Neighborhoods

Suffer These Crimes in Oakland? Don't Call the Cops

Dozens of layoffs effective at midnight, barring last minute deal

Oakland's police chief is making some dire claims about what his force will and will not respond to if layoffs go as planned.

Chief Anthony Batts listed exactly 44 situations that his officers will no longer respond to and they include grand theft, burglary, car wrecks, identity theft and vandalism. He says if you live and Oakland and one of the above happens to you, you need to let police know on-line.

Some 80 officers were to be let go at midnight last night if a last-minute deal was not reached. That's about ten percent of the work force.

"I came her e to build an organization, not downsize one," said Batts, who was given the top job in October.

That deadline has been extended to 5 p.m. Tuesday.

A Rise In Violent Crime Evokes City's Unruly Past

Teenagers flashing knives in a spate of high school stabbings. Two men murdered in a brawl aboard a downtown No. 2 subway train. Four people shot and 33 others arrested in late-night melees in Times Square that Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg described with a loaded term from the past: “wilding.”

It is impossible to know if the recent increase in violent crime in the city is legitimate cause for concern that the “bad old days” of crime may return, or if it simply represents a blip in a trend line continuing a descent of nearly two decades.

Homicides are up nearly 22 percent in 2010, compared with the same period last year. Shootings are up in the city, to 293 from 257, a 14 percent increase. And there are more victims of gunfire: 351 through April 4, up from 318 in the same period a year ago...
