I think a more likely scenario is that the UFO sightings were military test projects, especially since a significant number the sightings occur near military and nuclear facilities. This resurgence in UFO/alien coverage could be laying the groundwork (via predictive programming) of a UFO and/or religious rapture hoax by the government (do a search on the term "Project Bluebeam" or "Project Blue Beam") to induce fear and panic worldwide in order to offer a "solution" to the "crisis".
