SAS 'Smash' squads on the ground in Libya to mark targets for coalition jets

UK Daily Mail

SAS teams are on the ground in Libya with orders to pinpoint and destroy Colonel Gaddafi’s weapons.

Dozens of the crack troops have been operating behind enemy lines to identify targets for bombing raids.

Highly-trained units, known as ‘Smash’ teams for their prowess and destructive ability, have carried out secret reconnaissance missions to provide up-to-date information on the Libyan armed forces.

It is understood the soldiers have reported the location of airfields, supply routes, radar stations and Libya’s anti-aircraft defence batteries.

This intelligence was used by British defence chiefs to help RAF Tornado fighters and the Royal Navy’s submarine in the Mediterranean, HMS Triumph, deliver devastating strikes.

U.K. Special Forces Protecting Holiday Shoppers?

CBSNews.com

Elite British paratroopers have reportedly been deployed to the busy commercial streets and shopping centers of the United Kingdom to protect holiday shoppers from terrorist attacks.

The Sun, Britain's most widely-read newspaper, is a tabloid but is generally considered to have very reliable national security sources. Their Tuesday front-page article, which quotes unnamed officials, says troops from the SAS regiment (Special Air Services) have been deployed alongside police in London, Birmingham and other big cities.

According to The Sun, the SAS troops will be carrying semi-automatic assault rifles, pistols and stun grenades. The paper did not say how many members of the elite military regiment would be scattered about Britain's shopping centers.

The intention, according to the newspaper, is for the special forces to be on-hand in the event of a wide-scale attack by terrorists using bombs and or guns -- such as the rampage by a group of gunmen in the Indian city of Mumbai which left more than 100 people dead.

Britain has not raised its terror alert level as the holiday season ramps up, but groups like al Qaeda have previously tried to launch attacks around Christmas, and large crowds of shoppers around the U.K. undoubtedly make an attractive target to terror organizations.

Fury As Google Puts The SAS's Secret Base On Street View In 'Very Serious Security Breach'

Military chiefs and MPs blasted internet giant Google today after its Street View service included detailed pictures of the headquarters of the SAS.

Internet users can peer around the entrance to Credenhill, Herefordshire, which has never before appeared on maps for security reasons.

The base is even marked as 'British SAS' on the website and offers users a detailed 180 degree view of the perimeter boundary.

MPs and military top brass have demanded Google removes the pictures, claiming it makes the SAS a target for terrorist attacks...
