Summit County Police to Use License Plate Scanners

AKRON, Ohio -- The Summit County Sheriff's Office is getting some high-tech help giving deputies the chance to scan license plates much faster than the human eye ever could.

A Federal Homeland Security Grant will help fund the purchase of equipment that has the ability to scan as many as five-thousand license plates in an eight hour shift.

Cameras will be mounted on top of a patrol car and tied into a computerized database with license records from the U.S., Canada and Mexico...
