Walmart Shooting Leaves 2 Dead, 2 Deputies Hurt

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- Detectives are investigating why a man ran from deputies and then opened fire in a Walmart parking lot, sparking a shootout that left him and the woman he apparently was with dead and two law officers wounded.

Sunday's violence came after the Kitsap County Sheriff's deputies answered a call about a suspicious person at the store in Port Orchard.

Two deputies located the man and tried to talk to him but he began running, pursued by the officers.

"For reasons not yet known, the suspect turned and fired multiple shots," sheriff's spokesman Scott Wilson said.

Both men were hit and unable to return gunfire, but a female officer arriving on the scene shot and killed the gunman, Wilson said...

4 Detroit Police Officers Shot at Precinct, Cops Say

DETROIT -- A gunman opened fire inside a Detroit police precinct Sunday, wounding four officers including a commander before police shot and killed him, authorities said.

Police Chief Ralph Godbee said along with the commander, two sergeants and an officer were wounded, but none appeared to have life threatening injuries.

Two officers, one U.S. Marshal shot in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Three law enforcement officers were shot in St. Petersburg this morning.

ABC Action News reporter Don Germaise is on the scene and says two of the officers are with the St. Petersburg Police Department. The third is a U.S. Marshal.

Germaise describes the situation as "highly fluid." Multiple shots have been heard throughout the morning.

The shootings occurred around 7:45 a.m. at a home in the 3700 block of 28th Avenue South.

The gunfire broke as the officers were attempting to serve a warrant. According to a police spokesman, the officers were met at the front door by a woman who said the suspect was in the attic. One officer tried to get the suspect out of the attic and that's when he began firing. Two of the officers managed to get out of the house. The third was unable to escape...

Post-Katrina Fatal Shooting Brings New Orleans Cop Michael Hunter 8 Years in Prison

NEW ORLEANS (CBS/AP) Michael Hunter stood quietly as a judge sentenced the former New Orleans police officer Wednesday to eight years in federal prison for his role in the coverup and deadly shooting of unarmed civilians after Hurricane Katrina.

The sentence from U.S. District Judge Sarah Vance was the maximum allowed, and nine months more than sentencing guidelines recommended.

Vance called the police shooting on the Danziger Bridge that killed two and wounded four civilians, "sickeningly brutal."

Hunter admitted firing at the people on the bridge, even though he knew they were unarmed and posed no threat, but said he did not hit anyone. But Vance pointed out that he did nothing to stop his fellow officers from firing, in fact watching "an officer shoot Ronald Madison in the back at close range."

Ronald Madison, 40, and mentally disabled, and James Brissette, 19, were killed and four wounded as they crossed the bridge in search of food five days after Katrina struck Aug. 29, 2005...

New Analysis Of 40-Year-Old Recording Of Kent State Shootings Reveals That Ohio Guard Was Given An Order To Prepare To Fire

The Ohio National Guardsmen who fired on students and antiwar protesters at Kent State University on May 4, 1970 were given an order to prepare to shoot, according to a new analysis of a 40-year-old audio tape of the event.

"Guard!" says a male voice on the recording, which two forensic audio experts enhanced and evaluated at the request of The Plain Dealer. Several seconds pass. Then, "All right, prepare to fire!"

"Get down!" someone shouts urgently, presumably in the crowd. Finally, "Guard! . . . " followed two seconds later by a long, booming volley of gunshots. The entire spoken sequence lasts 17 seconds.

The previously undetected command could begin to explain the central mystery of the Kent State tragedy - why 28 Guardsmen pivoted in unison atop Blanket Hill, raised their rifles and pistols and fired 67 times, killing four students and wounding nine others in an act that galvanized sentiment against the Vietnam War.

The order indicates that the gunshots were not spontaneous, or in response to sniper fire, as some have suggested over the years...
