The documents also reveal the UK spy agency GCHQ has made use of the NSA database to search the metadata of “untargeted and unwarranted” communications belonging to people in the UK.

It was described by President Franklin D.Roosevelt as "a date that will live in infamy", a day on which the slaughter of 2,400 US troops drew America into Second World War and changed the course of history.

Now, on the 70th anniversary of Japan's devastating bombardment of the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, evidence has emerged showing that President Franklin D.Roosevelt was warned three days before the attack that the Japanese empire was eyeing up Hawaii with a view to "open conflict."

The information, contained in a declassified memorandum from the Office of Naval Intelligence, adds to proof that Washington dismissed red flags signalling that mass bloodshed was looming and war was imminent.

"In anticipation of possible open conflict with this country, Japan is vigorously utilizing every available agency to secure military, naval and commercial information, paying particular attention to the West Coast, the Panama Canal and the Territory of Hawaii," stated the 26-page memo.

Dated December 4, 1941, marked as confidential, and entitled "Japanese intelligence and propaganda in the United States," it flagged up Japan's surveillance of Hawaii under a section headlined "Methods of Operation and Points of Attack."

It noted details of possible subversives in Hawaii, where nearly 40 per cent of inhabitants were of Japanese origin, and of how Japanese consulates on America's west coast had been gathering information on American naval and air forces. Japan's Naval Inspector's Office, it stated, was "primarily interested in obtaining detailed technical information which could be used to advantage by the Japanese Navy."

"Much information of a military and naval nature has been obtained," it stated, describing it as being "of a general nature" but including records relating to the movement of US warships.

The memo, now held at the Franklin D.Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in upstate New York, has sat unpublicised since its declassification 26 years ago. Its contents are revealed by historian Craig Shirley in his new book "December 1941: 31 Days that Changed America and Saved the World."
Three days after the warning was delivered to the White House, hundreds of Japanese aircraft operating from six aircraft carriers unleashed a surprise strike on the US Navy's base at Pearl Harbour, wiping out American battleships, destroyers and air installations. A total of 2,459 US personnel were killed and 1,282 injured.

Conspiracy theorists have long claimed that Roosevelt deliberately ignored intelligence of an imminent attack in Hawaii, suggesting that he allowed it to happen so that he would then have a legitimate reason for declaring war on Japan. Up to that point, public and political opinion had been against America's entry into what was seen largely as a European war, despite Roosevelt's private support for the Allies' fight against the so-called Axis - Germany, Italy and Japan.

But Mr Shirley said: "Based on all my research, I believe that neither Roosevelt nor anybody in his government, the Navy or the War Department knew that the Japanese were going to attack Pearl Harbour. There was no conspiracy.

"This memo is further evidence that they believed the Japanese were contemplating a military action of some sort, but they were kind of in denial because they didn't think anybody would be as audacious to move an army thousands of miles across the Pacific, stop to refuel, then move on to Hawaii to make a strike like this."

As with the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, US leadership was guilty of a "failure of imagination" in its inability to translate warning signs into a specific prediction of the horror that lay ahead, he said.

Roosevelt declared war on Japan the day after the blitz on Pearl Harbour. Japan, Germany and Italy reciprocated with their own declarations, but America's involvement in the war turned the tide against the Axis powers and ultimately led the Allies to victory.

Americans, who a year previously had been assured by Roosevelt that they would not be sent to fight foreign wars, suddenly found their fates transformed. The US military swelled, with 16 million heading off to war, and women took on new and more widespread roles in the workforce, and in the military.
Washington became a global power base and the War Powers Act gave the president supreme executive authority. The "America First" movement, which had lobbied against the country's entry into the war and at its peak had 800,000 members, disbanded within days.

"December 7, 1941, was the powder-keg that changed the world. It changed America instantly from an isolationist country on the morning of December 7 to an internationalist country on the morning of December 8," said Mr Shirley.

The 70th anniversary of the tragedy at Pearl Harbour is being marked with a week of commemorative events in Hawaii. They culminate on Wednesday in a minute's silence and a ceremony of remembrance overlooking the wreck site of the USS Arizona, which sank with the loss of 1,177 lives.

Of the 29,000 survivors who joined the Pearl Harbour Survivors Association following its foundation in 1958, only ten per cent are still alive, most aged in their late 80s and beyond. With so few left, and most unable to travel to reunions or help with the group's administration, the PHSA will close down after the anniversary.

"It's going to be a poignant moment. Sooner or later we're all going to be gone," said Duane Reyelts of St Augustine, Florida, who was a 19-year-old signalman aboard the USS Oklahoma when it was bombed at Pearl Harbour.

He will turn 90 later this month, but still has vivid memories of waking in his bunk after working the midnight watch, when the ship's warning system sprang to life with the order: "All hands man your battle stations."

Seconds later, a torpedo hit with a thunderous explosion. He could hear vast amounts of water pouring in below, and eight more torpedoes. The ship turned over, forcing him to scramble up a wall to escape.
"I happened to be small enough to get out of a porthole. When I got out, I was sitting on the bottom of the ship and I couldn't believe what I was seeing: planes were attacking and the whole harbour seemed to be on fire. Bodies in the water, smoke, screams." he said.

He hesitated to jump in the water, but had no choice as a stream of machine-gun fire rained around him from the aircraft overhead. He swam to the USS Maryland, where he joined a line of sailors hauling ammunition.

"The Navy and armed forces must have had notification that something could happen; being a signalman on the bridge and being on lookout, that was something we were told - if you see a periscope out there, it may not be ours. But we never really imagined an assault of this nature," he said.
He will re-tell his story once more during a remembrance service aboard a US Navy vessel on Wednesday, when the ashes of Pearl Harbour veterans who have died during the last year will be scattered at sea.

"Those of us who are left try to tell our stories as much as possible, not just for history's sake but because America needs to be kept alert today," he said. "America needs to remember the lessons of Pearl Harbour."

Israel is doomed, the state has no right to exist and it’s identity politics are all based on false assumption, hyperbole, a false history of persecution.  Israel floats on a sea of lies, once exposed it will sink into oblivion and be remembered as an aberration of evil, a death machine that the world tolerated for to long damning humanity a miserable future of a nuclear contaminated earth, the Fukushima radioactive volcano a gift of extinction by the chosen ones.  Israel is a gift of hell unto the world.



The unacceptable treatment of the native Palestinians in the modern world is enough to cancel Israel.  The mythos of a murderous tribe is out of touch with modern sensibilities.  Israel gets away with  its genocidal  internal Gaza bombing stunts by a Jewish controlled press, that whitewashes it crimes and exaggerates other states defenses against its aggression.  It’s high time to end the Jewish monopoly of the mass media, it’s time to classify Jewish ownership as a religious monopoly.

Holy Land Claim Jumpers

So what legal claim do they assert to the land?  A fictional book about a fictional god who talked to a fictional people.  Israel has no legal claim, a holy book does not establish a claim, the Bible is not a legal document.  The Bible is a bullshit document.  People that assert the authenticity of the Bible and its blood lust are suffering a cult of supremacy delusion, none of it is true.  None of it.  No god, no afterlife judgment, no hell, no chosen ones.

It’s total bullshit and no one should be allowed to psychologically abuse children with these ideas.  What gives you the right to program children into religious cults?  All religions are cults, they all do weird things like mutilating sex organs, the world can’t take this abuse any longer.  We should not allow cults to mutilate children.  Do you think it’s ok for Rabbis to perform oral circumcision?

If you ever get your mind free of the that myth and see it for what it is then you will realize that hell is created on earth because of the belief in hell.  People will do anything to get with god, getting to god first is like the gold rush claim jumpers, people will do anything to get the claim first.  “Get the hell out my way, that god is mine!”.

How do we solve this problem of Jews in Palestine?  The two state solution is no solution because the Jews have no right to any claim.  The problem is NOT Jewish immigration to the so called holy land, the problem is with the Jews and their ethnocentricity, they are unable to live with others, just look at how they behave here in America, just look at how they have behaved all through history.  They never change because their books never change.  Want to fix the problem for once and for all time?  Then take their god damn books away from them!

The problem is that Jews are unreasonable and can’t get along and when they get political power they make hell on the other tribes.  They will never get along because they can’t get along, when you are a Jew you are taught that it is your job never to get along.  Putting the Jews in Palestine was a no brainer as to the wedge effect, and a way for the Jewish owned Anglo-American empire to get a foothold in the Middle East.  Do you think this was the plan all along?

Jews have this other lovely trait, they whine when caught.  When those being abused by Jewish predation catch on they scream antisemitism, Holocaust denier, stop picking on us.  They somehow worked up this idea that if they act like outcasts then are treated as outcasts then that is proof of their chosen status.  Since I am not a trained professional in psychology and Bible bullshit, you’ll have to check with a PhD on why that is.  Maybe it’s because the Bible encourages assholes to be assholes, but that’s just a guess.

The Jewish race-religion, or whatever it is, is the problem, once a human being gets programmed to be “me only” and to hell with everyone else then you have a problem, because once the ego latches onto this exclusionary mentality, watch out.  This exclusionary idea taught to Jews and Christians that God chose us is the problem.

I’m tired of this world going to hell because of religious ideology and I tell you what, next time I’m whooping it up drinking whiskey my fist might choose some Jew or Christian face.  We don’t have to put up with this shit.  I am not going to put up with these filthy bastards any longer.  Time to scrap.

This problem isn’t limited to the Jews, We can see this ugliness clear as day with white nationalistic Christians who think they are the chosen ones.  By some unbelievable twisting of Bible logic, white Europeans magically become the chosen ones, the lost tribe of Israel.  Yeah, they’re lost all right, lost in Bible bullshit.  Those with twercked Bible possessed minds just have to be chosen.  Many of these ‘tards really believe they are the  “true” lost tribe.  As you can guess, they can’t get along with anyone either.

So it isn’t just a Jew thing, its a “I’m chosen” thing.  Well imagine my fist in your face you separatist, we are a melting pot now and are going to have to deal with it.  You got a problem with me then I got a problem with you.  I’ll stand side to side with any other ethnicity and beat the crap out of those people possessed with exclusionary ideas.

The problem with this book is that it gets people all worked up trying to be the teachers pet with God.  Fearful of not being the favored and a end life trip to hell.  I’m not sure why people worship the Bible god, he doesn’t seem very human to me, he seems to be very much like a murderous Jewish supremacist.
Then we have this other problem that most modern Jews are not of Middle East ancestry.  DNA crosschecking has proved beyond a scientific doubt that 98% of the current Jewish population in Israel are not the real Hebrews.  Got that?  Not Hebrews, as if the Hebrew tribe was anything but a literary fiction all along.  Once again it’s all bullshit. What Jews?  What wandering tribe?  What part of this madness has any validity?  None of it.

Israel’s Obsession with False Flag Deceptions

Israel is also doomed because it has performed false flags on the nation that bankrolls it.  Israel killed JFK, Israel attacked the USS Liberty, Israel spied on the United States, Israel performed 911 and was probably involved in other numerous false flags.  As this information leaks out and the nation becomes aware of what Israel has done, then Israel is finished.

There is absolutely no way that Israel can survive once exposed to light, Israel is the heart of darkness and evil, a murderous state machine, all while claiming divine inspiration.

What would a sane world do about a mad dog tearing up earth?  Eventually the world will come to its senses and see Israel for what it is, a state floating on fictional holy book myths, a state that is nothing but bad, a nation that follows no law, cares nothing for anyone or anything, a sickness of self-centeredness.  Israel is a lawless state and makes mockery of world government, this is why the New World Order is really a drive for a Jewish world disorder.   The NWO is mayhem because look who’s driving the bus.

A sane world would physically remove Israel’s offensive weapons and its WMD’s.  The world should take back all of the weapons they gave to Murder Inc.  All the aircraft retrieved, all the submarines retrieved, all of the bunker busting bombs retrieved.   Do not give modern weapons to a state run by warmongers hell bent on world domination.

Allowing Israel to possess nuclear weapons is suicidal, Israel will use nuclear weapons without reservation even on the host country.  Israel will use nuclear weapons to black mail the United States, Israel will blow up American cities with even blinking an eye and then when found out tell you you deserved it because you dared to think otherwise.  They don’t care, giving Israel nukes is like giving an alcoholic a bottle of whiskey and tell them not to drink it.  Trusting Israel is like trusting a pit bull to play with junior.

The world will eventually reject the gift of hell, Israhell that is, the world will eventually reject the idea of a murderous tribe as special, the world will eventually pull the plug on Jewish madness.  It is only a matter of time before the world totally rejects Israel and everything she stands for.  Israel is an epic failure, the modern world has trumped ancient superstitions.

No one is chosen, no one is special, we are all one race of beings sharing a planet, a planet we are severely abusing in the name of religion and supremacist ideology.  It’s time to outlaw these old time religions.

Israel has no right exist, the Bible should be banned, Netanyahu arrested for genocide, terrorism and war crimes.  That is what sane people would do.  The precedent has been set with Noriega and Saddam, any head of state can be taken down and put in jail.  Netanyahu can be taken down and dethroned before he does something really stupid.

No one on this planet needs to be threatened by Netanyahu and his Likud madness.  Arrest Netanyahu just like we did with Noriega.  War crimes show trial.  Put his victims in the courtroom, put the surviving Palestinian parents of murdered children in front of that bastard and confront him for his deeds.

Its time to stop Israel’s war aggression and its time to arrest Netanyahu, remove weapons from Israel.  Israel has no right to exist, the Jewish only state should be immediately dismantled or destroyed and the world stepping in to manage fractured Palestine.  The world needs to police the Jews.

Governments Admit They Carry Out False Flag Terror

Governments from around the world admit they carry out false flag terror:

• A major with the Nazi SS admitted at the Nuremberg trials that – under orders from the chief of the Gestapo – he and some other Nazi operatives faked attacks on their own people and resources which they blamed on the Poles, to justify the invasion of Poland. Nazi general Franz Halder also testified at the Nuremberg trials that Nazi leader Hermann Goering admitted to setting fire to the German parliament building, and then falsely blaming the communists for the arson

• Soviet leader  Nikita Khrushchev admitted in writing that the Soviet Union’s Red Army shelled the Russian village of Mainila in 1939, and declared that the fire originated from Finland as a basis launching the Winter War four days later

• Israel admits that an Israeli terrorist cell operating in Egypt planted bombs in several buildings, including U.S. diplomatic facilities, then left behind “evidence” implicating the Arabs as the culprits (one of the bombs detonated prematurely, allowing the Egyptians to identify the bombers, and several of the Israelis later confessed) (and see this and this)

• The CIA admits that it hired Iranians in the 1950′s to pose as Communists and stage bombings in Iran in order to turn the country against its democratically-elected prime minister

• The former Italian Prime Minister, an Italian judge, and the former head of Italian counterintelligence admit that NATO, with the help of the Pentagon and CIA, carried out terror bombings in Italy and other European countries in the 1950s and blamed the communists, in order to rally people’s support for their governments in Europe in their fight against communism. As one participant in this formerly-secret program stated: “You had to attack civilians, people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game. The reason was quite simple. They were supposed to force these people, the Italian public, to turn to the state to ask for greater security” (and see this)(Italy and other European countries subject to the terror campaign had joined NATO before the bombings occurred). • As admitted by the U.S. government, recently declassified documents show that in the 1960′s, the American Joint Chiefs of Staff signed off on a plan to blow up AMERICAN airplanes (using an elaborate plan involving the switching of airplanes), and also to commit terrorist acts on American soil, and then to blame it on the Cubans in order to justify an invasion of Cuba. • 2 years before, American Senator George Smathers had suggested that the U.S. make “a false attack made on Guantanamo Bay which would give us the excuse of actually fomenting a fight which would then give us the excuse to go in and [overthrow Castro]“.

• And Official State Department documents show that – only nine months before the Joint Chiefs of Staff plan was proposed – the head of the Joint Chiefs and other high-level officials discussed blowing up a consulate in the Dominican Republic in order to justify an invasion of that country. The 3 plans were not carried out, but they were all discussed as serious proposals

• A U.S. Congressional committee admitted that – as part of its “Cointelpro” campaign – the FBI had used many provocateurs in the 1950s through 1970s to carry out violent acts and falsely blame them on political activists

• The South African Truth and Reconciliation Council found that, in 1989, the Civil Cooperation Bureau (a covert branch of the South African Defense Force) approached an explosives expert and asked him “to participate in an operation aimed at discrediting the ANC [the African National Congress] by bombing the police vehicle of the investigating officer into the murder incident”, thus framing the ANC for the bombing

• An Algerian diplomat and several officers in the Algerian army admit that, in the 1990s, the Algerian army frequently massacred Algerian civilians and then blamed Islamic militants for the killings (and see this video; and Agence France-Presse, 9/27/2002, French Court Dismisses Algerian Defamation Suit Against Author)

• Senior Russian Senior military and intelligence officers admit that the KGB blew up Russian apartment buildings and falsely blamed it on Chechens, in order to justify an invasion of Chechnya (and see this report and this discussion)

• According to the Washington Post, Indonesian police admit that the Indonesian military killed American teachers in Papua in 2002 and blamed the murders on a Papuan separatist group in order to get that group listed as a terrorist organization.

• The well-respected former Indonesian president also admits that the government probably had a role in the Bali bombings

• As reported by BBC, the New York Times, and Associated Press, Macedonian officials admit that the government murdered 7 innocent immigrants in cold blood and pretended that they were Al Qaeda soldiers attempting to assassinate Macedonian police, in order to join the “war on terror”.

• Although the FBI now admits that the 2001 anthrax attacks were carried out by one or more U.S. government scientists, a senior FBI official says that the FBI was actually told to blame the Anthrax attacks on Al Qaeda by White House officials (remember what the anthrax letters looked like). Government officials also confirm that the white House tried to link the anthrax to Iraq as a justification for regime change in that country

• Former Department of Justice lawyer John Yoo suggested in 2005 that the US should go on the offensive against al-Qaeda, having “our intelligence agencies create a false terrorist organization. It could have its own websites, recruitment centers, training camps, and fundraising operations. It could launch fake terrorist operations and claim credit for real terrorist strikes, helping to sow confusion within al-Qaeda’s ranks, causing operatives to doubt others’ identities and to question the validity of communications.”

• United Press International reported in June 2005:
  

  U.S. intelligence officers are reporting that some of the insurgents in Iraq are using recent-model Beretta 92 pistols, but the pistols seem to have had their serial numbers erased. The numbers do not appear to have been physically removed; the pistols seem to have come off a production line without any serial numbers. Analysts suggest the lack of serial numbers indicates that the weapons were intended for intelligence operations or terrorist cells with substantial government backing. Analysts speculate that these guns are probably from either Mossad or the CIA. Analysts speculate that agent provocateurs may be using the untraceable weapons even as U.S. authorities use insurgent attacks against civilians as evidence of the illegitimacy of the resistance.

• Undercover Israeli soldiers admitted in 2005 to throwing stones at other Israeli soldiers so they could blame it on Palestinians, as an excuse to crack down on peaceful protests by the Palestinians

• Quebec police admitted that, in 2007, thugs carrying rocks to a peaceful protest were actually undercover Quebec police officers (and see this)

• At the G20 protests in London in 2009, a British member of parliament saw plain clothes police officers attempting to incite the crowd to violence

• A Colombian army colonel has admitted that his unit murdered 57 civilians, then dressed them in uniforms and claimed they were rebels killed in combat

• U.S. soldiers have admitted that if they kill innocent Iraqis and Afghanis, they then “drop” automatic weapons near their body so they can pretend they were militants

• The highly-respected writer for the Telegraph Ambrose Evans-Pritchard says that the head of Saudi intelligence – Prince Bandar – recently admitted that  the Saudi government controls “Chechen” terrorists

So Common … There’s a Name for It

This tactic is so common that it was given a name for hundreds of years ago.
“False flag terrorism” is defined as a government attacking its own people, then blaming others in order to justify going to war against the people it blames. Or as Wikipedia defines it:

False flag operations are covert operations conducted by governments, corporations, or other organizations, which are designed to appear as if they are being carried out by other entities. The name is derived from the military concept of flying false colors; that is, flying the flag of a country other than one’s own. False flag operations are not limited to war and counter-insurgency operations, and have been used in peace-time; for example, during Italy’s strategy of tension.

The term comes from the old days of wooden ships, when one ship would hang the flag of its enemy before attacking another ship in its own navy. Because the enemy’s flag, instead of the flag of the real country of the attacking ship, was hung, it was called a “false flag” attack.
Indeed, this concept is so well-accepted that rules of engagement for naval, air and land warfare all prohibit false flag attacks.

Feds Accused of Harassing “Boston Bomber” Friends, and Friends of Friends

In the six months since the Boston Marathon bombing, the FBI has by all appearances been relentlessly intimidating, punishing, deporting and, in one case, shooting to death, persons connected, sometimes only tangentially, with the alleged bombers.

All of these individuals have something in common: If afforded constitutional protections and treated as witnesses instead of perpetrators, they could potentially help clear up questions about the violence of April 15.  And they might also be able to help clarify the methods and extent of the FBI’s recruitment of immigrants and others for undercover work, and how that could relate to the Bureau’s prior relationship with the bombing suspects—a relationship the Bureau has variously hidden or downplayed.

Who Cares? We Do

The Boston tragedy may seem like a remote, distant memory, yet the bombing warrants continued scrutiny as a seminal event of our times. It was, after all, the only major terror attack in the United States since 9/11. With its grisly scenes of severed limbs and dead bodies, including that of a child, it shook Americans profoundly.

As importantly, in its aftermath we’ve seen public acquiescence in an ongoing erosion of civil liberties and privacy rights that began with 9/11—and to an unprecedented expansion of federal authority in the form of a unique military/law enforcement “lockdown” of a major metropolitan area.

Nonetheless, at the time, most news organizations simply accepted at face value the shifting and thin official accounts of the strange events. Today few give the still-unfolding saga even the most minimal attention. And it is most certainly still unfolding, as we shall see.

ADL: 100 Years of Hate

TODAY MARKS THE 100th anniversary of the largest and most-well funded hate and defamation group in the history of mankind: the Anti-Defamation League, or “ADL.” The organization was originally called the “Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith” after its parent group, the Jewish fraternal order B’nai B’rith (meaning “Sons of the Covenant,” or, literally, “Sons of the Cut” — referring to circumcision). The ADL was founded in the immediate aftermath of the conviction of Atlanta B’nai B’rith President Leo Frank for the strangulation and sex murder of a 13-year-old factory girl, Mary Phagan. The international Jewish community did not believe that Frank should have been convicted. They had mounted a huge press, publicity, legal, and lobbying campaign to convince officials and the public that a Black man, James Conley, was the real killer. But the evidence against Frank was so strong — and the evidence against Conley so thin — that the Southern, all White, and doubtless philo-Semitic (like most of the Christian South) jury unanimously convicted Leo Frank and sentenced him to hang. Two months after Frank’s conviction, on October 20, 1913, the ADL was formed. To this day, the ADL and its allies promote the fiction that Frank’s conviction was a result of “anti-Semitism” and use the case a rallying cry to garner support and funding.

The ADL operates as a private intelligence agency, sending spies, infiltrators, disruptors, and agents provocateurs into the camps — both Jewish and non-Jewish — of those who disagree with its radically pro-Israel and Jewish supremacist agenda. Also like an intelligence agency, it maintains a huge database containing personal information on politicians, writers, dissidents, activists, publishers, bloggers, and even unaffiliated private citizens so that — should any of these people “get out of line,” in the opinion of the ADL — they can be threatened, “exposed,” blackmailed, and thus silenced with maximum effectiveness.

US lawmaker: McCain supported al-Qaeda in Syria

A Republican member of the US House of Representatives has said Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) “supported al-Qaeda” in Syria.

During a speech at the annual Values Voters Summit in Washington, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) severely criticized McCain for supporting former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak, and the al-Qaeda-linked militants in Syria.

Gohmert’s criticism was in response to remarks made by McCain in an interview with Fox News where he described Republicans’ efforts to defund President Obama’s signature Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, amid a US government shutdown as “a fool’s errand.”

“When it comes to the shutdown that's going on, I heard just before I came some senator from Arizona, uh, a guy that liked Gaddafi before he wanted to bomb him, a guy that liked Mubarak before he wanted him out, a guy that's been to Syria and supported al-Qaeda and rebels, but he was saying today the shutdown has been a fool's errand,” Gohmert said.

NSA isn’t foiling terrorist plots

US officials claim that the government’s massive data collection has protected the country from terrorist attacks.

After The Guardian’s first revelations about the National Security Agency’s digital surveillance programs, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Rep. Mike Rogers, head of the House Intelligence Committee, jumped to the NSA’s defense by pointing to two terrorist plots supposedly foiled by the organization’s digital surveillance programs. Lawyers and policemen involved in these cases disputed these claims, but this did not keep NSA chief Keith Alexander from taking it up a notch by raising the number of foiled attacks to more than 50, and later to 54.

These numbers are crucial for an informed debate about the digital surveillance programs. If the NSA’s digital surveillance indeed prevented 54 terrorist attacks, the public can decide whether these 54 attacks are worth their privacy. This number would suggest that the NSA’s programs are actually keeping the United States and Europe safe from terrorism.

It is far from certain, however, that the NSA is getting its numbers right.
